British Columbia Summer: Premier Birding Guide Biographical Sketch

Chris Charlesworth

Chris has been an enthusiastic birder for most of his life, with over 30 years birding experience in British Columbia, where he has been a professional bird guide for over twenty years.

While growing up, Chris and his family lived in Kelowna, in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, right next to the Chichester Wetlands that would provide early access to nature and encourage his passion for birding. Chris knew he wanted to do something related to birds when he was younger, and that’s what he did.

Though working for the Partnership for International Birding for only a short while, Chris has extensive bird guiding experience throughout North America, where he has led over fifty birding tours in British Columbia, over a hundred birding tours in Canada, and almost a hundred birding tours in the USA for a number of UK based and Canadian companies (including his own).

His birding travels have taken him throughout much of North America, with favorite destinations including California, Arizona, and Texas in the USA, and Point Pelee and Vancouver Island in Canada.  Chris has also co-led trips to Mexico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, Peru, Australia and South Africa.  Besides guiding for the Partnership for International Birding in British Columbia, the Pacific Northwest, California and Alaska, Chris is now our Director of North American Operations.

Clients comment on his excellent field skills. With a style said to be laid back, Chris thoroughly enjoys showing people birds and making sure his clients get good views of any species (especially life birds).

Chris also volunteers his time as an ebird reviewer for large swaths of British Columbia. He has been organizing Christmas Bird Counts since he was a teenager, and still compiles two. He has served on the B.C. Rare Birds Committee, and he is also the regional editor for British Columbia for North American Birds magazine.
