Texas Mega: Rio Grande Valley, Hill Country, and Big Bend

There are some places that every birder dreams of going -southeast Arizona, Florida Keys, Alaska... A state as big as Texas offers at least three such destinations: the lower Rio Grande Valley, the Hill Country, and Big Bend. This trip takes you to all three of those key places, bringing you to where most major target birds can be found: Colima Warbler, Black-capped Vireo, and Golden-cheeked Warbler, plus a whole host of Rio Grande specialties and chances for rarities along the way.

More details about this trip:

On this trip, we start off in the Rio Grande Valley looking for specialties like Green Jay, Common Pauraque, Altamira Oriole, Buff-bellied Hummingbird, Green Parakeet, Olive Sparrow, Long-billed Thrasher, and Great Kiskadee.  We will also be enjoying a number of spring migrants as they pass through, and with luck, may even have the right weather to experience a fallout.

As we head west, we pass through the Hill Country, where we pick up both Golden-cheeked Warbler and Black-capped Vireo.

We finally end up in Big Bend, where the main attraction will be the search for the Colima Warbler. Along the several-mile hike up to the warbler habitat, we should also encounter Mexican Jays, Hutton's Vireo, Townsend's Warbler, White-throated Swift, and more.

Along the way, many other key species can be seen (Gray Hawk, Lucifer Hummingbird, Green Kingfisher, Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Gray Vireo (uncommon), Cassin's Sparrow, Varied Bunting, and Tropical Parula) making this trip a highlight of your birding career.

We are also adding a visit to the Davis Mountains where the star attraction will be Montezuma Quail, Elf Owl, Phainopepla, Western Bluebird, Scott's Oriole, Black-throated Gray Warbler and other western species.
