Canada: Eastern Newfoundland Birding: Coastal Seabird Colonies, Boreal Forests and Magnificent Vistas
A July birding trip to Newfoundland is the prime time to see large numbers of nesting seabirds, such as Northern Gannet, Black-legged Kittiwake, Common Murre, and, a favorite of most birders, Atlantic Puffin. Nesting along with these birds we will see Razorbill, Thick-billed Murre and Black Guillemot. Other birds likely to be seen on the ocean include Sooty Shearwater, Great Shearwater, Manx Shearwater and usually a jaeger or two.

There are plenty of wonderful land birds to be seen as well, most of them actively nesting at this time. We will enjoy hearing the songs and calls of Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Boreal Chickadee, Gray-cheeked Thrush, Fox Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow and Lincoln’s Sparrow. At least ten species of warblers can be expected, including Blackpoll Warbler, Palm Warbler, Magnolia Warbler and Northern Waterthrush. We’ll make a special effort to look for Mourning Warbler as well.
We will enjoy a two-hour boat trip to get close looks at the nesting bird colony. During this trip, we will come up close to Humpback Whales. From St. Vincent’s beach, we will watch the Humpbacks ‘play’, gannets crash into the ocean, and shearwaters soar over the surf. As we drive the road to Cape Race, we’ll scan for Willow Ptarmigan, Short-eared Owls, Rough-legged Hawks, Moose and Caribou. Have your camera close at hand - there is always a chance to see icebergs offshore, Snowshoe Hares or Ruffed Grouse on the roadsides, and amazing scenery as we drive around the Avalon Peninsula.
