Colombia's Endemic Rich Birding:
Cauca and Magdalena Valleys

Colombia is bird-rich and endemic rich, and the Cauca and Magdalena Valleys offer the birder a great opportunity to enrich their South American birding experience.

• Colombia itself has 1,852 bird species and 81 endemic species.     Global and local efforts have supported the development of a       number of reserves to support bird-finding.
• Our main birding trip and its two extensions give you the opportunity to see over fifty endemic bird species, and most tours see nearly 600 species in two weeks.

Our most endemic rich and popular tour starts in Cali (about 3.5 hours from Miami by airplane) and ends in Bogota, traveling through the Cauca and Magdalena Valleys. Nearly every trip participant adds on the Santa Marta extension.

The Cauca Valley, one of the important eco-regions in Colombia, is home to a number of endemic bird species not occurring anywhere else in the country. The Western and Central Cordilleras on both flanks of the valley harbor many species with ranges restricted to the cloud forests and grassland Páramos of the mountains.

Beyond the species endemic to Colombia’s Cauca Valley, there are a good number of bird species shared with bordering Ecuador; however, many of these species are more easily seen in Colombia where the populations of such species are either better represented or found in areas of easier access.
The main tour (Cauca and Magdalena Valley) offers birders a good chance to see four hundred species and with the Santa Marta extension pushing productive birding tours near 600 species and nearly 50 endemics. The Rogitama extension assure productive tours see well over 600 bird species and a chance to see 53 endemic bird species.
