Tennessee Birding with Warblers and More
Brief Overview of the Trip
Day 1:  Arrival/April 22 into Nashville by noon or Knoxville
a bit later (before 2 PM).  Late afternoon birding in
Knoxville area. Good chance for Brown-headed Nuthatch
and Pine Warbler.

Day 2:  Sharps Ridge: Migrating warblers and some of
the more common nesting species in the Knoxville area.
This ridge is the main springtime birding site here. A
pleasant walk along the paved road could yield a lot of the
target songbirds the first few hours of the trip! From here,
we'll then move on to some other migrant traps and a
quickly growing trip list.

Day 3:  Cove Lake State Park and Cross Mountain for
breeding songbirds. Highlights include Golden-winged,
Prothonotary, Cerulean and Kentucky Warblers. There is
a chance for Red-headed Woodpecker and Swainson's
Warbler.

Day 4:  Kyker Bottoms, Wood Thrush Ridge and Chota
Waterfowl Refuge:
Our best chances to add some
waterfowl and shorebirds to the trip list. Some chance for
American Bittern, Sora, Bobolink, owls. Dusk offers a
chance to see Chuck-will’s-widow, and maybe an Eastern
Whip-poor-will or American Woodcock.

Day 5:  Cherohala Skyway:  This route offers excellent
opportunities to see many of the higher elevation breeding
species in the area.

Day 6:  Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge and Great
Smoky Mountain National Park:
Another try at some hot
spots near Knoxville and including Seven Islands NWR.
Then afternoon start at Great Smoky Mountain NP.

Day 7:  Great Smoky Mountain National Park: Full day
of fantastic birding here with chance for Swainson's
Warbler and Henslow's Sparrow and much more.

Day 8:  Departure from Knoxville or Nashville on April 29.

more) species of warblers. Other highlights of this trip
include possibility of Ruffed Grouse, Chuck-will's-widow,
Brown-headed Nuthatch, (newly split) Winter Wren, Wood
Thrush, Scarlet Tanager, four species of vireo and a
number of eastern flycatchers.

Stops include a number of key birding hot spots including
Sharps Ridge, Cove Lake State Park, Cross Mountain,
Kyker Bottoms, Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge, Chota
Waterfowl Refuge and Cherohala Skyway. Then we spend
some time at the Smoky Mountains National Park. This trip
offers a lot for bird watchers and wildflower/nature
