| Trip Description |
| Given Portugal's diversity of habitats in a relatively small area, this trip will result in productive European birding over a short period of time. The trip includesTagus and Sado estuaries (two remarkable protected wetlands), the Alentejo (rolling plains), the Algarve (wetland areas situated on a major fly-way for migrants), Portas de Ródão and the International Tagus Nature Park (important protected areas for rock loving birds), a river boat trip for Rueppell’s Vulture, and Portugals' cork oak woodlands. We have also included several local spots for picking up additional key species. Some of the many key species on this trip include Little Bittern, Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Greater Flamingo, Little Bustard, Great Bustard, Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Lesser Kestrel, Spanish Imperial Eagle, Audouin’s Gull, Slender- billed Gull, Griffon Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Bonelli’s Eagle and Black Stork. Also, we will find Azure-winged Magpie, Hoopoe, European Bee-eater, Red-necked Nightjar and Spectacled Warbler. Total bird species should be about xx to xx. The fall trip will likely get a few more shore bird species (excellent for first time European birders) and xx, xxx, The spring trip will be better for xxx, xxx, xx. |

| Day 1: Arrival into Lisbon and start birding at Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve: Including areas of Barroca d’ Alva, Atalaia, Samouco, Hortas, and Pancas Day 2: Full day birding Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve: Ponta da Erva Area Day 3: Sado Estuary Nature Reserve Area: Including Zambujal, Gâmbia, Monte Novo de Palma, Batalha, Carrasqueira and Comporta Day 4: Alentejo Region: Includes Castro Verde plains and the Pulo do Lobo area. Day 5: Alentejo region, including Alcaria Ruiva, Mértola, Pomarão and Mina de São Domingos (Guadiana Valley Nature Park Day 6 – Algarve region: Castro Marim Nature Reserve and Tavira areas (Ria Formosa Nature Park). Day 7 –Ria Formosa Nature Park (Quinta do Lago, Ludo) and the Salgados lagoon. Day 8 –Bird as we travel to Tagus Nature Park where we will visit Portas de Ródão an enjoay a boat trip on the Tagus river Day 9 – Visit the International Tagus Nature Park, namely Rosmaninhal, Segura and Salvaterra do Extremo areas. Overnight at the Hotel Rural da Poupa. Day 10: Travel to Lisbon (about 2 hours). Visit Lisbon and transfer to Lisbon airport for return flight. |
